How to Prepare for Your Exam

Minimize
MAMMOGRAM
Do not wear powder, deodorant or perfume. Wearing of slacks/shorts is recommended. PLEASE bring prior mammogram films, if they are available

ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND
NPO (Nothing by Mouth) for at least 8 hours prior to exam

PELVIC / OB (PREGNANCY) ULTRASOUND
Patient needs to drink 4 - 10 oz glasses of water. This needs to be completed at least 30 minutes prior to your exam.

DO NOT GO TO THE BATHROOM

All other Ultrasound/Doppler Studies require no prep

CAT SCAN
All contrast studies recommend NPO (Nothing by Mouth) for 4 hours prior to exam. Non-contrast studies have no preparation

MRI
It is recommended that wearing of jewelry, hair pins and eye make-up be kept to a minimum. Persons with Pacemakers CANNOT be examined. Persons with cerebral aneurysm clips or inner ear implants may or may not be examined. These patients and pregnant patients should be discussed individually with the radiologist. Patients feeling they may need sedation and patients requiring sedation must have a responsible driver accompany them and stay until the exam is completed.

UPPER GI
NPO (Nothing by Mouth) after midnight

ORAL GALLBLADDER
Eat a fat containing evening meal the day prior to exam. A Prep kit must be obtained from the US Imaging Facility: Swallow 6 or 12 pills, 1 or 2 every 5 minutes starting at 6 PM the night before the exam. Patient may have clear liquids until midnight, then NPO (Nothing by Mouth)

BARIUM ENEMA
Obtain commercial prep kit (Fleet Enema Prep Kit) available from your imaging center, your referring doctor, or any pharmacy

IVP
Clear liquid evening meal. Mild laxative day before test. NPO (Nothing by Mouth) after midnight

MYELOGRAM
NPO (Nothing by Mouth) after midnight prior to exam. Patient MUST be accompanied by a responsible driver to remain with patient throughout the exam.

ARTHOGRAM
NPO (Nothing by Mouth) 4 hours prior to exam

VENOGRAM
NPO (Nothing by Mouth) 4 hours prior to exam
